Like most of our counterparts, we are a not-for-profit educational organization. Our mission is to educate the public about hostas, to encourage the development of new cultivars and to promote their use in the landscape. We strive to achieve our goals through a full schedule of events and learning experiences throughout the year.
NIHS works with other local hosta societies, the Midwest Regional Hosta Society (MRHS) and the American Hosta Society (AHS) on issues of mutual interest. We host the popular MRHS Winter Conference (open to the public) every January in the Chicago suburbs. We have also hosted three MRHS Conventions since 1999, most recently in 2013.
Our origins go back to 1992 when Tom Micheletti gathered several fellow hostaphiles together and founded the Northern Illinois Hosta Society. Tom was its first president for four years. Still an active NIHS member, he has also served multiple terms as president of the Midwest Regional Hosta Society and the American Hosta Society. He remains one of the country's most knowledgeable hosta experts.
